Successful Safe Routes to School programs emphasize the “Five E’s”: Engineering, Enforcement, Encouragement, Education, and Evaluation. Safe Routes efforts can include anything from additional crossing guard patrols, to a “walking school bus” of parents and children, to infrastructure improvements.
Through a Community Transformation Grant awarded to Greenville County in 2012, Upstate Forever will complete five Safe Routes to School travel plans for selected Greenville County schools in 2013 and 2014. These schools include Monaview Elementary, Welcome Elementary, Duncan Chapel Elementary, Augusta Circle Elementary, and Bryson Elementary. The travel plans will identify strategies to provide schools with a clear path to increase the number of students walking and biking to school.
